In our municipality of Alphen-Chaam the remains of an old (and only) Commandry of the Knights Templars in The Netherlands still exist, an order of monks dating back to the Middle Ages; they were crusaders. The inhabitants of our region were liable to a monastery of yet another religious order some 50 kilometers away. The monks had a predominant role in their time. They managed the lands, they built the monasteries, the churches and the hospitals, protected the pilgrims, farmers and citizens. They made the rules, wrote the books. They conducted services in the rituals of spiritual life and were the guardians of civilization and morality. Throughout the world and in all religions and civilizations there are people officiating in the same way. Both men and women. In each and every human being, there might even be a monk lurking: a moralist, a dedicated person desiring to live in peace and regularity, occasionally secluded from the world outside. Their perceived eccentricity has often been mocked by the general public and artists alike. For example, in the works of Hieronymus Bosch many a monk and saint is represented, for better or for worse. Think of the temptation of Antony, of John as a scholar and writer, etc.
