        De monnik en het meisje

        Ik schreef voor u al zonder geloof of gemak
        Mijn bedaagde hand tastte naar geboeid gehoor,
        Zoals de monnik ooit tegen de dieren sprak,
        Taal bekoort gelijkelijk het oog en het oor

        Bezingt mijn gedicht melancholie en jonge
        Openheid evenzeer, ambigu als de maagd
        En de moeder, door kwezels blanco bezongen?
        Begeerlijkheid wordt door grijze handen belaagd

        De critici scherpen onderwijl hun oordeel
        Van elk geschreven woord wordt de waarde bepaald
        Geen ascetisch gemis of Bourgondisch teveel

        Wordt geduld door uw hovelingen, hooggeleerd
        Bepotelen zij mijn tekst tot de schoonheid smaalt
        Het detail zit in de duivel en omgekeerd

        The monk and the maid

        I wrote for you before, without much faith or ease.
        My aging hand reached out for those who’d want to hear,
        not unlike Francis who once preached to birds in trees.
        The word equally beguiles the eye and the ear.

        Do my lines likewise praise melancholy and young
        candour, ambiguous like the Virgin Mother,
        whose praises plaster saints have always blandly sung?
        It is her charms that gray hands try to smother.

        Meanwhile, the critics hone their verdict and assess;
        of every written word the value is taken.
        No ascetic want or exuberant excess

        escapes your courtiers. Serving academia,
        they finger my verses till beauty is shaken.
        The detail is in the devil, and vice versa.
